'La La Land' Review: It Really Will Make You Sing!

The only thing my English teacher, Mr. Sheridan, will talk about lately other than books is the new movie La La Land. He talks about it so much that the phrase, “Watch La La Land!!” has been a part of my life for weeks. Since he talks nonstop about the movie, I decided to watch it and see if it was actually “the best film of the year,” as he described it to be.

La La Land is not only an entertaining musical, but it is also a film that focuses on relationships, commitment, dreams, and success. Mia, played by Emma Stone, and Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, try to reach their dreams of being famous and find their happiness. Mia is striving to become an actress and Sebastian is seeking a musical career. Just like everyone, Mia and Sebastian go through their ups and downs: such as Sebastian getting fired from his job as a pianist at a restaurant and Mia getting rejected from multiple auditions. They realize that life is not easy and that it takes more than dreaming to achieve fame and glory.

My favorite part of this film was the music, dancing, and the bright vibe it sends to the audience. “Another Day of Sun” opens the film with a motivational, determined message, and lively beat. In general, the music was unique in the way that it demanded the audience’s attention, and letting no one forget that we get to hear John Legend bless us with his voice! I enjoyed, though, that the movie was not completely based on music but instead on themes of rejection and breakups. It was a thrill!

Personally, I am not a huge fan of musicals because they seem too extravagant, but I still give this film four out of five stars because of its uniqueness and powerful message towards dreaming. Many people have big dreams that they want to make into triumph, but they do not have enough support, nor do they have the motivation. La La Land does a magnificent job on making the audience feel carefree, yet determined. Splendid job, Damien Chazelle, cast and crew!
